Language Arts | Definition, Components & Importance
1. Reading
Reading is the process of understanding the letters and symbols that make up words and making meaning out of them. Young students begin by learning the letters of the alphabet, the sounds they make, and that letters can be put together to form words. They are taught phonics, how letter sounds can be combined to form words, and to recognize sight words, commonly used words in the English language such as ''is.'' Beginning readers move on to sounding out words and reading simple sentences like ''The dog runs.'' The ability to read the words and comprehend their meaning is equally important. Students progress from reading short books to novels.
As students' reading ability improves, the complexity of the reading material increases. Not only are the words and sentences more complicated, so are the ideas and concepts contained within the reading material. Students are taught to not only read for understanding but to interpret or analyze what they have read.
The language arts teaches students more than how to read. It teaches students how to make meaning of what they have read.

2. Writing
In its simplest form, writing is the process of visibly forming letters or words. Young students must first learn how to properly draw the letters of the alphabet, then how to form sentences by putting together words and using punctuation, and finally how to combine sentences to form paragraphs.
Once students have the ability to record their thoughts in writing, they are taught creative writing and essay writing. Creative writing includes writing original stories and poems. An essay is a writing composition that has been assigned a particular topic or theme. Some examples are comparison-contrast essays, persuasive essays, and literary an
alysis essays.
